Abstract

The project aims to create and develop an innovative school model, where the teaching/learning process takes place in a dynamic and motivating learning environment. The traditional classroom thus turns into a variety of multilingual and multicultural contexts, in which students grow aware of the importance of the international dimension of modern life in a constantly changing world.

As the project title suggests, the trait d’union that binds together all the activities included in the project is the idea that Diversity leads to a higher degree of Unity, through the development of a sense of belonging to a common space.

Students attending our school’s three courses – Classical Studies, Modern Languages, Human Sciences – are involved in a variety of activities which are aimed at developing and consolidating their competence in communicating in one or more foreign languages, while improving their ICT abilities.

Among the activities included in the project there are various levels of language courses (English, French, Spanish, German, Italian Sign Language - LIS) with the final corresponding certification; teaching modules using the CLIL methodology; interdisciplinary activities both at local level, also involving the territory, and at European level, in the Erasmus + and PON projects; short and long term transnational mobility for students to European and overseas countries; cultural exchanges for students of various European countries (Italy, Spain, Germany); language-training programmes in the U.K, Ireland, Spain; activities related to the working world in Ireland. The project also includes teacher training courses aimed to improve the language competence and developing an international approach to teaching.

A substantial impact of the project has been observed on all the members of the school community: students have improved their communicative competence and motivation to learn in a lifelong learning approach; teachers have acquired better planning and organizational abilities in an international dimension; parents partecipate more actively in their children’s school life; finally, the school cooperates in a network of schools, both at local and European level, with a view to sharing and spreading good practices.
